Global luxury brand Prada has introduced Kolhapuri-inspired sandals made in India after backlash, highlighting cultural recognition issues while opening global doors for traditional Indian craftsmanship

Kolhapur | 29 April 2026:Italian luxury fashion house Prada has once again drawn attention in India after launching a new line of sandals inspired by traditional Kolhapuri chappals, a heritage craft rooted in Maharashtra.

The move comes after the brand faced criticism last year for showcasing similar designs during a Milan fashion show without acknowledging their Indian origin. Kolhapuri chappals, known for their handcrafted leather design and historical roots, have long been associated with artisans from western Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka.

Following the backlash, Prada has now shifted its approach by collaborating with Indian artisans and introducing a “Made in India” collection. The initiative aims to blend traditional craftsmanship with global design and manufacturing standards.

Reports indicate that the new collection is being produced in partnership with local organisations, with a focus on skill development and international exposure for artisans. The brand has also outlined training programmes to support traditional craftsmen and improve production capabilities.

However, the development has not fully silenced criticism. Many observers argue that while the collaboration is a step forward, concerns around cultural appropriation and fair recognition still remain. The pricing of the luxury versions, significantly higher than locally made Kolhapuri chappals, has also been a point of debate. The controversy has sparked a larger conversation about how global brands engage with traditional crafts. While some see it as an opportunity to bring Indian heritage to international markets, others stress the importance of giving due credit and economic benefit to original artisans.

Despite the debate, the spotlight on Kolhapuri chappals has increased global awareness about the craft, potentially opening new avenues for Indian artisans in the international fashion industry.
