May 5, 2026 | Pune: In a significant step towards promoting grassroots sports development, the Pune Municipal Corporation has approved a ₹11.61 crore project to establish a modern sports nursery in Hadapsar. The initiative is aimed at encouraging children to engage in physical activities from an early age while reducing their dependence on digital screens.

The proposed facility will be developed near Magarpatta Road in Hadapsar, a rapidly growing suburb in eastern Pune, and will span over 10,000 square metres. Officials said the project has received approval from the civic body’s standing committee, with funds to be allocated in phases over the next few years.

Designed specifically for children aged between 3 and 12 years, the sports nursery will include dedicated spaces for multiple sports such as football, basketball, hockey, and volleyball. In addition, the facility will feature a running track, skating area, and other recreational amenities aimed at holistic development.

According to civic officials, the project will be executed in phases over a period of two to three years, with a structured financial plan already in place. The phased allocation includes significant funding across upcoming municipal budgets to ensure timely completion. Authorities emphasised that the initiative comes at a time when urban children are increasingly exposed to screen-based lifestyles, often at the cost of physical activity. Experts believe that the availability of dedicated sports infrastructure at a young age can play a crucial role in improving physical fitness, mental well-being, and social skills among children.

With shrinking open spaces in rapidly urbanising areas like Hadapsar, the project is also expected to address the lack of safe and accessible playgrounds. Civic officials expressed confidence that the sports nursery will help build a stronger sports culture in Pune while nurturing future talent at the grassroots level.
