Due to a cooking gas shortage triggered by the Gulf conflict, the Maharashtra government has decided to distribute kerosene through ration cards. Pune district will receive 2.04 lakh litres, with taluka-wise quotas fixed by the administration for rural Antyodaya beneficiaries.

Pune | March 26, 2026: Amid growing concerns over cooking gas availability due to the ongoing Gulf conflict, the Maharashtra government has decided to distribute kerosene through the rationing system to provide relief to citizens. As part of this initiative, Pune district has been allotted a total of 2.04 lakh litres of kerosene, which will be sold at ₹62 per litre through ration cards. District authorities have finalised taluka-wise allocation based on the number of ration card holders. According to officials, Baramati taluka has been allotted the highest quota of 33,000 litres, followed by Indapur with 27,000 litres. Other talukas including Junnar, Shirur, Daund, Ambegaon and several rural regions have also been assigned fixed quantities for distribution.
District Supply Officer Mahesh Subalkar stated that the quota was determined after reviewing the number of eligible ration card holders in each taluka. To streamline distribution, three wholesale kerosene dealers have been appointed to manage supply logistics. In a significant decision, the district administration has excluded municipal areas from the distribution plan. This means the kerosene supply will be limited only to rural beneficiaries, particularly those holding Antyodaya ration cards. Officials clarified that the restricted distribution was necessary due to the limited supply received compared to actual demand.

According to estimates, Pune district required nearly 24.36 lakh litres of kerosene to meet overall needs. However, the quota received is significantly lower, prompting authorities to prioritise the poorest households under the Antyodaya category. District Collector Jitendra Dudi has issued instructions to ensure fair and transparent distribution. Officials have also been asked to strictly monitor the sale process to prevent black marketing and misuse.
The kerosene distribution is expected to offer temporary relief to rural households facing difficulties due to uncertainty in LPG supply and rising fuel costs. Authorities have assured that further allocations will be sought if the energy crisis continues.
