Pune Faces Water Crisis Risk as Authorities Propose Alternate-Day Supply Plan
Water Crisis
Pune Municipal Corporation considers water rationing measures including alternate-day supply or weekly shutdown amid warnings of reduced rainfall and declining water availability in city reservoirs.

Pune, April 11, 2026 Pune residents may soon face water supply restrictions as authorities prepare a contingency plan in response to warnings from the Water Resources Department about a potential drop in rainfall this year. The Pune Municipal Corporation is reportedly evaluating options such as supplying water on alternate days or completely suspending distribution one day a week to manage expected shortages.
Officials stated that the proposal comes after forecasts linked to El Niño conditions suggest rainfall could decline by nearly 30 percent, putting pressure on reservoir levels. The city currently depends on dams including Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar for its daily water needs. The civic body draws approximately 1,560 million litres of water per day, making efficient management critical in case of delayed monsoon rains.
According to senior water supply officials, implementing a weekly shutdown could help save around 10 to 15 percent of water, while alternate-day supply may conserve up to 25 percent. The final decision is expected to be taken after consultations with political representatives and a detailed assessment of public impact and local supply conditions.

Authorities have already received a notice recommending a 15 percent cut in water usage and have begun planning awareness campaigns to encourage conservation. Measures such as reducing leakage, preventing wastage, and promoting water reuse are also being prioritised to ease pressure on resources.
Officials warned that rapid urban growth and rising demand have intensified the challenge of maintaining uninterrupted supply. While reservoir levels are currently slightly better compared to last year, uncertainty over rainfall patterns has forced the administration to act early. Civic authorities have stressed that public cooperation will be essential for successfully managing the situation if restrictions are imposed.
