Pune PMC has seized 519 gas cylinders from unauthorised roadside vendors over seven months as the civic body intensifies its enforcement drive.
Pune, September 19, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified its crackdown on unauthorised roadside businesses, with the civic body’s Encroachment Department seizing 519 gas cylinders over the past seven months.
The action has been undertaken against roadside food stalls and other businesses operating without the required permissions, particularly those using LPG cylinders and cooking equipment in public spaces.
Action Against Unauthorised Roadside Businesses
According to the PMC, enforcement teams have been carrying out regular drives against unauthorised commercial activities occupying roads, footpaths and other public spaces.
The use of LPG cylinders by roadside food vendors has also emerged as a safety concern, particularly when cooking is carried out in congested areas without adequate precautions.
The latest PMC action comes amid broader scrutiny of roadside food and tea stalls in Pune. Police recently initiated action against nine roadside stalls over alleged violations involving combustible materials and occupation of public spaces.
519 Cylinders Seized
During enforcement operations conducted over a seven-month period, PMC teams seized 519 gas cylinders from unauthorised roadside vendors.
The seizures are part of the civic body’s action against businesses operating without the necessary permissions and against commercial activities that obstruct public spaces.
Officials have also been removing other materials associated with unauthorised roadside businesses during such drives.
Fire Safety Concerns
The use of LPG cylinders and cooking equipment on busy roadsides can create additional fire and public-safety concerns, particularly where stalls operate close to pedestrians, vehicles and other commercial establishments.
Recent police action against nine stalls in areas including Kothrud, Karvenagar, Kirkatwadi and Yerawada highlighted concerns over the use of gas cylinders, stoves and other combustible materials without adequate safety measures.
Footpath Encroachments Also Under Scrutiny
Apart from fire safety, the PMC is also targeting unauthorised occupation of footpaths and roads by roadside businesses.
The civic body has previously removed stalls and other temporary structures occupying pedestrian pathways. Such enforcement is intended to keep footpaths available for public use and reduce obstruction to pedestrian movement.
At the same time, the regulation of street vending needs to operate within the applicable legal framework. The Bombay High Court has noted that street vendors have a right to carry on business, while also emphasising that vending should not obstruct public movement or cause inconvenience to residents.
Enforcement Expected to Continue
The seizure of 519 gas cylinders highlights the scale of PMC’s enforcement activity against unauthorised roadside businesses.
With roadside food stalls continuing to operate across different parts of Pune, civic authorities are expected to maintain inspections and take action where businesses are found violating applicable permissions, safety requirements or public-space regulations.
The focus remains on balancing roadside vending activity with fire safety, pedestrian movement and the proper use of public spaces.
