Pune police uncover and act against illegal arms supply from Madhya Pradesh’s Umarti; large cache of weapons seized, multiple detentions made.
Pune | 05 February, 2026 – Pune police have scored a major success in dismantling an inter-state illegal arms network that was supplying country-made pistols and live cartridges from Umarti village in Madhya Pradesh. Over recent weeks, police seized multiple firearms in Pune, and investigations revealed that the weapons originated from Umarti, a village infamous for illegal firearm production. The discovery confirmed that Umarti served as both a production and distribution hub, supplying weapons to Pune and other parts of Maharashtra.

In late November 2025, Pune police, in coordination with Madhya Pradesh authorities, conducted a large-scale raid in Umarti. Around 105 officers participated in the operation, targeting clandestine manufacturing units. Nearly 50 workshops involved in pistol production were destroyed, and 36 individuals were detained for questioning. Authorities also seized a substantial quantity of raw materials and firearm components, including unfinished barrels, magazines, grinding machines, pistol bodies, saw blades, and other tools used to manufacture weapons. Forensic analysis of these materials is ongoing to link them to specific crimes committed in Pune.
Police investigations revealed that all firearms seized in Pune over recent weeks were traced back to Umarti, confirming the village’s critical role in the trafficking network. Its location near the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border allowed easy distribution of weapons across state lines. Officials suspect that the network supplied firearms not only to Pune but also to other cities and regions, highlighting the scale and organization of the operation. To ensure operational success, the raid was meticulously planned, with prior reconnaissance and coordination with local authorities. Officers used drones and body cameras, and the operation was conducted at dawn to minimize resistance and secure crucial evidence.
Law enforcement experts emphasize that cracking down on such inter-state arms networks is essential to prevent violent crime and curb organized criminal activity in urban areas. The arrests and seizures mark a significant blow to the supply chain that has historically fueled criminal activity in Pune. Police are also investigating whether weapons from Umarti were used in specific violent incidents in the city. Experts note that operations like this highlight the importance of interstate cooperation and intelligence sharing to tackle illegal arms manufacturing and smuggling effectively.

The Pune police operation against the Umarti arms network underscores a determined effort to enhance public safety and dismantle entrenched illegal firearm networks. By seizing firearms, raw materials, and detaining key suspects, authorities aim to reduce violent crime linked to illegal weapons and strengthen law enforcement oversight in Maharashtra. The case also sends a strong message to criminal networks operating across state borders that coordinated police action can disrupt even deeply entrenched illegal operations.
