Pune Police Take Strong Action Against Loud Motorcycle Silencers, Seize 45 Bikes

Pune police crack down on modified motorcycle silencers in Kharadi, seize 45 bikes and destroy silencers to curb noise pollution and public nuisance.

Pune | 24 February, 2026- Pune police recently carried out a major anti-noise drive in the Kharadi area, targeting motorcycles fitted with illegal loud silencers. During the operation, 45 bikes were seized, and the modified silencers were destroyed to prevent further noise pollution. The crackdown comes after residents repeatedly complained about excessive noise from motorcycles, particularly during late-night and weekend hours, which disrupted daily routines and affected the overall quality of life in the neighbourhoods.

The operation focused on high-capacity bikes, including Royal Enfields, that had been modified with aftermarket exhaust systems to produce extremely loud “cracker-like” sounds. Police officers conducted patrols and trap operations in residential zones, stopping offenders and confiscating motorcycles that violated legal noise limits. The modified silencers were removed on the spot, and owners were instructed to fit standard silencers compliant with noise regulations. To deter repeat offenders, the seized silencers were destroyed using heavy machinery, sending a strong message that noise pollution will not be tolerated.

Authorities emphasized that riding with illegal silencers violates sound emission standards under the Motor Vehicles Act, and offenders can face vehicle seizure, fines, and other legal penalties. Residents welcomed the enforcement action, noting that excessive noise not only causes public nuisance but also poses health risks for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and night-shift workers.

This crackdown is part of a broader effort by city authorities to maintain public peace and uphold traffic and environmental laws. With rising vehicle ownership and urban growth in Pune, noise management has become a critical aspect of ensuring livable neighbourhoods. Authorities have also encouraged citizens to report noisy vehicles promptly, highlighting community participation as essential in controlling noise pollution.
