A joint RPF–GRP team in Pune arrested five members of the Sansi gang for stealing 233 grams of gold from a train passenger, tracking the suspects across multiple states before the breakthrough.

Pune, December 03, 2025 – A joint team from the Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police has cracked a major gold theft case by arresting five members of the Sansi gang, a group long known for targeting passengers on long-distance trains. The case began when a woman travelling on the Gandhidham–Bengaluru Express reported that her bag containing gold ornaments had gone missing between Sangli and Miraj. The gold, weighing 233 grams and valued at more than eight lakh rupees, is one of the higher-value thefts reported on this route in recent months.

Investigators launched a coordinated operation soon after the complaint was filed with the Miraj GRP. The Pune Division activated its specialised Tejaswini CPDS unit, which worked closely with multiple agencies to track the suspects. CCTV footage from the Miraj yard helped the team identify the movements of the accused and trace their escape route. Technical surveillance, tower-location data and intelligence inputs pointed investigators toward Sangli, Kolhapur and eventually Delhi, where the suspects were attempting to stay out of sight.

The accused were intercepted at New Delhi Railway Station and taken into custody. They were identified as Kuldeep, Amit Kumar, Monu, Ajay and Hawa Singh, all residents of Haryana. They had reportedly boarded a flight from Goa to Delhi soon after the theft, hoping to avoid detection. After interrogation, the group admitted to stealing the gold on the train. Police are now working to recover the stolen ornaments and verify if the same gang is linked to other thefts on trains along the Pune, Kolhapur and Gujarat routes.

The operation has been praised by railway officials, who pointed to the teamwork between RPF, GRP and intelligence units as the key reason for the quick breakthrough. Recent months have seen several theft cases reported on long-distance trains, and authorities believe this particular gang may be connected to multiple incidents. The arrests offer some reassurance for passengers who have been increasingly worried about safety of valuables during overnight travel.

Security teams say this case highlights the importance of being alert while travelling and keeping close watch on bags, especially during early morning and late-night hours when thefts tend to occur. They also noted that organised groups like the Sansi gang often work in coordinated teams, boarding and exiting trains at different stations to avoid detection. For the police, tracking such criminals requires strong coordination, reliable surveillance and timely intelligence sharing.

The railway division expects that the interrogation of the arrested suspects will help uncover further details about their network and identify any accomplices. Investigators are also re-examining unsolved cases from the past few months to determine whether the gang played a role. As recovery efforts continue, the arrest of these five men marks one of Pune’s most important security successes this year.

For passengers, the news brings a sense of relief and reinforces the role of joint policing efforts in keeping railway routes safe. With this breakthrough, authorities hope to deter other criminal groups and send a clear message that thefts targeting passengers will be met with swift and coordinated action.
