Pune :Parents in Pune are facing growing challenges in securing admissions for their children under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, as procedural delays and mismanagement continue to create hurdles during the ongoing admission cycle.

April 16 | Pune: The dream of enrolling children in English-medium schools through the Right to Education (RTE) Act is becoming increasingly difficult for many parents in Pune. Amid rising temperatures, families are struggling to navigate a complicated and time-consuming admission process, marked by long queues, limited timelines, and lack of clarity. This year, over 1.14 lakh seats have been made available across 8,701 schools in Maharashtra under the RTE quota. However, the response has been overwhelming, with nearly 2.89 lakh applications submitted. While more than 1.05 lakh students have been allotted seats, around 86,000 remain on the waiting list, reflecting the intense competition for limited opportunities.
The challenges have been particularly evident at document verification centres, especially in areas like Akurdi in Pimpri-Chinchwad, where parents are required to stand in long queues for hours. Many of them are daily wage workers who are losing income while trying to complete the formalities. The situation is further aggravated by the limited 10-day verification window, which is effectively reduced due to weekends and public holidays, leaving parents anxious about meeting deadlines. Several parents have also raised concerns about the lack of transparency in the process. Complaints have emerged that acknowledgment receipts are not being issued after document submission, creating uncertainty about application status. Additionally, some schools have allegedly demanded extra fees despite the RTE mandate of free education, including textbooks and uniforms.

Concerns have also been raised about irregularities in the application process, with allegations of fake documents and incorrect address proofs being used. Parents are now urging authorities to extend deadlines, simplify procedures, and ensure stricter verification to maintain fairness. As pressure mounts, there is a growing call for swift action to make the RTE admission process more transparent, efficient, and accessible for all.
