Residents of Pune’s upscale Baner and Balewadi neighborhoods are up in arms over chronic power failures, questioning their “Smart City” status after enduring a grueling ten-hour blackout this past Monday

Pune| May 13, 2026 : The glittering promise of a high-tech “Smart City” was overshadowed by darkness this week as residents of Baner and Balewadi faced a massive power disruption. On Monday, May 11, electricity remained suspended for over ten hours in several sectors, leaving citizens to grapple with soaring summer temperatures and failing essential services.

The recurring outages have sparked intense frustration among locals, who reported that domestic appliances, water pumps, and air conditioning units have become virtually decorative. The area, known for its premium residential societies, IT firms, and bustling commercial establishments, is facing significant economic and lifestyle disruptions. “Are we living in a Smart City or a remote village?” questioned one resident, echoing a sentiment widely shared across social media platforms.

The crisis has been attributed to an overburdened electrical grid. MSEDCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited) officials confirmed that the surge in power demand due to the summer heat led to the simultaneous failure of three critical transformers on Monday. While ground staff reportedly worked until 2:00 AM to restore connectivity, locals claim these are merely “band-aid” solutions to a systemic problem.

Community leaders and residents like Sarang Wable have warned of organized protests if a permanent solution is not implemented. The core demand remains the urgent construction of a dedicated sub-station for the Baner-Balewadi belt. While political promises regarding a new sub-station have been frequent, actual progress remains stalled, leaving thousands of taxpayers in the lurch. As the mercury continues to rise, the demand for reliable infrastructure has moved from a convenience to a necessity for Pune’s tech corridor.
