Pune | 6 March , 2026: Pune Traffic Police have issued a traffic advisory ahead of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti celebrations scheduled for Friday, warning commuters about major road closures and diversions across the city. The annual celebration attracts thousands of people who participate in traditional processions, cultural programs, and tributes to the legendary Maratha warrior king. As large gatherings are expected in central Pune, the traffic department has implemented special arrangements to ensure public safety and smooth management of the event.

According to the advisory, several key roads in the city’s old areas will remain closed for vehicular movement for certain hours due to the grand procession and public events. Major routes such as Laxmi Road, Shivaji Road, Bajirao Road, Tilak Road, and Nehru Road are expected to witness heavy congestion as they fall along the traditional procession route. These roads connect important commercial zones and densely populated localities, making them particularly sensitive during large-scale public celebrations.

Traffic officials said the main procession is likely to pass through multiple historic locations in the central part of the city, where cultural groups, dhol-tasha pathaks, and social organisations participate in large numbers. Due to the scale of the celebrations, vehicles traveling between Jijamata Chowk, Swargate, and the Civil Court area will be diverted through alternate routes including Jangli Maharaj Road, Khandoji Baba Chowk, and other connecting roads to prevent traffic congestion and maintain the flow of emergency services.

Public transport will also be affected by the traffic arrangements. The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has announced temporary diversions for several bus routes operating through the central city areas. Some buses will skip busy stretches such as Laxmi Road and operate through alternate corridors like Fergusson College Road, Jangli Maharaj Road, Dhole Patil Road, and Swargate before rejoining their normal routes. Passengers have been advised to check updated bus routes and timings before beginning their journey.

To accommodate visitors attending the celebrations, authorities have also identified designated parking zones at locations including Sangamwadi Parking, Agricultural College Ground, FC Ground, and Nadipatra parking areas. Traffic police personnel will be deployed across key junctions to guide motorists, manage crowds, and ensure that emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire brigades receive priority access where required.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is one of the most significant cultural events in Maharashtra, particularly in Pune, which holds historical importance in the Maratha Empire and the Peshwa era. Every year, the city witnesses elaborate celebrations that include grand processions, traditional music performances, and public tributes to the founder of the Maratha kingdom. The scale of participation often requires detailed traffic planning to prevent disruptions in the city’s busy urban network.

Officials have urged citizens to cooperate with traffic authorities and avoid traveling through central Pune unless necessary during the celebration hours. Commuters heading to offices, railway stations, or other important destinations have been advised to leave early and use alternative routes such as JM Road, FC Road, and other parallel roads to avoid delays.
