Pune’s Dedicated Cancer Hospital Project Stalled Amid Funding and Land Constraints

Efforts to establish a dedicated cancer hospital in Pune remain stalled due to funding shortages and land issues, delaying affordable treatment access for patients relying on public healthcare facilities.

April 9, 2026 | Pune The long-pending proposal to establish a dedicated cancer hospital in Pune continues to face delays, caught between funding limitations and unresolved land allocation issues. Despite sustained efforts by both the public health and medical education departments, the project has yet to move beyond the planning stage, raising concerns among patients and healthcare experts. State authorities have indicated their intent to set up new hospitals with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank, under a broader plan to strengthen healthcare infrastructure. Pune is among the key locations being considered for a specialised cancer facility. However, uncertainty over the site whether within the Sassoon hospital or at Aundh district hospital has further delayed progress.
The need for a dedicated cancer hospital has become increasingly urgent as the number of patients continues to rise. Currently, public hospitals in Pune provide essential services such as surgeries and chemotherapy, but lack advanced facilities like radiation therapy and palliative care. This forces many patients to turn to private hospitals, where treatment costs are often prohibitively high. Experts point out that a specialised cancer hospital would significantly reduce the financial burden on patients, especially those from economically weaker sections. The proposal has been under consideration for over a decade, with renewed momentum seen in recent years following fresh initiatives by the health department.

Officials maintain that coordination between departments is ongoing and that efforts are being made to expedite the project. However, until key challenges related to funding and land are resolved, the project is likely to remain in limbo. For thousands of patients seeking affordable and comprehensive cancer care, the delay continues to be a matter of concern, underscoring the urgent need for swift decision-making and implementation.
