Pune’s Dhanori Green Marathon Sees Massive Turnout as Thousands Embrace Fitness and Sustainability
PUNE
The“Green Marathon” held in Dhanori drew overwhelming public response, marking a strong show of community spirit in Pune around fitness and environmental consciousness.
Pune |08 December 2025: Nearly 10,000 to 12,000 residents of all ages — men and women from teenage runners to seniors — took part in the run, making it one of the largest local marathons in the city this year.

The event kicked off at the Dhanori Octroi Post, where Union Minister and Pune MP flagged off the run. Organised by a coalition of local social and civic bodies along with youth leaders, the marathon aimed to highlight the synergy between health, fitness and ecological awareness. The route culminated at the Dhanori Van Udyan (forest park), where participants were greeted by organisers, dignitaries, and cheering neighbours.
Runners completed the course with enthusiasm, many among them expressing pride in being a part of a cause that champions both physical wellbeing and environmental responsibility. At the finish line, winners across various age categories were awarded bicycles and cash prizes — symbolic of promoting eco-friendly mobility and healthy lifestyles.
But the marathon was not just about running. The day concluded with a ceremonial tree-planting drive at the park, with many participants planting saplings as a commitment to greener urban neighbourhoods. This gesture resonated with the organisers’ vision: to foster long-term environmental stewardship, not just one-off events.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Union Minister lauded the residents of Dhanori for their participation and environmental commitment. He linked the local effort to a broader national vision of a healthy, robust, and sustainable India by 2047. He also framed the marathon as part of a growing movement — combining the legacy of fitness campaigns and contemporary environmental consciousness.
Local activists and community organisations involved in the event said they plan to build on this momentum. They envision regular fitness events, periodic plantation drives, and greater awareness about pollution, waste management, and sustainable transport. The response on Sunday, they say, sends a clear message: urban communities in Pune are ready to take collective action for health and environment.
For Pune’s civic life, such grassroots initiatives matter. With urban sprawl, rising vehicular pollution, and shrinking green cover, community-driven marathons combined with tree planting can help strengthen neighbourhood bonds, improve public health, and restore environmental balance.
The Dhanori Green Marathon suggests that when residents, civic leaders, and local organisations come together, even a simple run can become a powerful statement — one that fosters community well-being, environmental consciousness, and a shared vision of a greener, fitter city.
