Pune’s new bio-CNG plant will transform 300 tonnes of wet waste daily into sustainable fuel, reducing waste and emissions. The state-approved project, backed by central and local funding, will soon begin its tender process.
Pune,June,27 2025– Pune is taking a bold step toward a cleaner, greener future by transforming its wet waste into bio-CNG, a sustainable fuel source, through a new state-approved initiative. This ambitious project, set to process 300 tonnes of waste daily, promises to tackle the city’s waste management challenges while fostering eco-friendly energy solutions for a healthier community.
The state government has greenlit a plan to establish a bio-CNG plant outside Pune, aligning with the Swachh Maharashtra Mission, a state-wide campaign inspired by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Urban) 2.0. This mission focuses on creating waste-free urban centers through innovative waste management and sustainable sanitation practices. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is now gearing up to launch the tender process, inviting private contractors to build and operate the facility. The project repurposes funds originally allocated for a now-canceled composting plant, ensuring efficient use of resources to address the city’s growing waste concerns.

With a budget of Rs 82.1 crore, the bio-CNG plant will be a collaborative effort, funded by the central government (Rs 20.5 crore), the state government (Rs 28.7 crore), and the PMC (Rs 32.8 crore). The facility will convert 300 tonnes of wet waste—such as food scraps and organic matter—into bio-CNG, a renewable fuel that can power vehicles and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This initiative not only addresses the city’s waste accumulation but also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, offering a win-win for the environment and residents.
The plant will be located outside Pune’s city limits due to the need for a large plot of land with a mandatory 200-meter buffer zone from residential areas, ensuring safety and compliance with environmental standards. A private contractor will be responsible for securing the land and constructing the facility, streamlining the process while maintaining oversight from the PMC. The government’s recent resolution has paved the way for swift action, with the tender process set to begin soon, marking a significant milestone in Pune’s journey toward sustainable urban living.
This project reflects a shared vision of a cleaner, more responsible city, where waste is no longer a burden but a resource. For Pune’s residents, the bio-CNG plant offers hope for cleaner streets, reduced landfill pressure, and a healthier environment. By turning wet waste into fuel, the initiative empowers the community to contribute to a circular economy, where everyday waste fuels progress. As Pune moves forward, this project stands as a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration in building a sustainable future for all.
