MNS chief Raj Thackeray criticized political leadership, alleging Maharashtra’s decline, Marathi neglect, and builder influence. He urged stronger Marathi identity, language pride, and awareness of historical values in public life
Mumbai | May 01, 2026:Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray launched a sharp attack on political leadership, holding them responsible for what he described as the declining condition of Maharashtra. Speaking at a public lecture event organized as part of a Vasant Vyakhyanmala, he said that the state has failed to recognize the greatness of many individuals who have contributed significantly across various fields.
Thackeray expressed concern over what he called the weakening of Marathi identity and language pride. He alleged that deliberate efforts have been made to prevent Marathi people from coming together as a unified force. According to him, political decisions over the years have weakened the position of the common Marathi-speaking population.
He also criticised the close relationship between politicians, builders, and industrialists, claiming that governance has increasingly come under their influence. Thackeray said that ordinary citizens have been left with little control over the direction of urban development, especially with rapid and unplanned construction changing the face of cities.

Highlighting issues related to language usage, he referred to instances where non-Marathi speakers were reportedly given leniency regarding learning Marathi, while questioning the response of elected representatives. He stressed the importance of Marathi being used in daily communication and encouraged people to take pride in their mother tongue. Thackeray also remarked that society is becoming increasingly distracted, with people engaged in sports, social media, and other activities, while core issues are being ignored. He expressed concern over people falling prey to misleading influences and said that historical awareness is being reduced to symbolic celebrations rather than meaningful understanding.
He further said that history should be studied for lessons rather than celebration alone, adding that society has forgotten the true strength and identity of Maharashtra. According to him, the lack of connection with historical values has contributed to the present situation. Thackeray concluded by urging Marathi speakers to use the language actively in daily life, stating that consistent usage would naturally encourage others to respond in Marathi, thereby strengthening linguistic identity.
