A retired officer allegedly dies by suicide in Baner over a prolonged property dispute with a builder; police register FIR for cheating and abetment of suicide.
Pune | 24 February, 2026- A tragic incident in Baner has left residents shocked after a 69-year-old retired government officer allegedly died by suicide following a prolonged property dispute with a local builder. The incident occurred at an under-construction multi-storey building on a plot that the deceased had reportedly handed over to the developer under a redevelopment agreement. Police have since registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the builder and his son on charges of cheating and abetment of suicide.
According to preliminary investigations, the retired officer had entered into an agreement with the developer several years ago, under which he was promised multiple residential flats in exchange for the land. However, the construction project allegedly faced repeated delays, and disputes reportedly arose over the fulfillment of the agreed terms. Family members claim that the ongoing disagreement caused significant emotional distress and financial anxiety for the elderly man.

Authorities stated that the retired officer visited the construction site shortly before the incident. He allegedly jumped from an upper floor of the building. A note recovered at the scene reportedly mentioned mental harassment and frustration linked to the unresolved property matter. Based on the contents of the note and statements provided by family members, police converted the case into a criminal investigation involving allegations of cheating and abetment.
An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Officials confirmed that further investigation is underway to examine the contractual agreement, financial transactions, and communications between the parties involved. Police are also verifying claims made in the alleged suicide note to determine whether criminal liability can be established. Efforts to locate and question the accused individuals are ongoing.
The deceased’s family has demanded strict legal action, stating that prolonged stress from the property dispute deeply affected his mental well-being. Local residents have also expressed concern over rising real estate conflicts and the emotional toll such disputes can take, particularly on senior citizens who may lack adequate legal and financial support.

Legal experts note that redevelopment agreements and builder-owner partnerships can become contentious if timelines are not adhered to or contractual clarity is lacking. They stress the importance of transparent agreements, legal due diligence, and accessible dispute resolution mechanisms to prevent conflicts from escalating. Mental health professionals also highlight that prolonged financial and legal stress can severely impact emotional stability, especially among elderly individuals.
The incident has reignited discussions around real estate accountability, consumer protection in property transactions, and the urgent need for stronger safeguards to protect landowners entering redevelopment deals. Authorities have urged citizens to seek legal guidance before entering property agreements and to approach law enforcement promptly if disputes arise.
