Rising addiction among minors raises concern as Pune Police highlight increasing substance abuse across all sections, calling it a major challenge and urging stronger awareness and enforcement measures.

Pune, 25 April | 2026: Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has flagged the growing issue of substance abuse among minors, stating that tackling addiction in young individuals has become a major challenge for law enforcement agencies. He noted that children from both underprivileged areas and affluent families are increasingly falling into the trap of addiction.

Kumar was speaking at the release of the ‘Sanyam’ report, prepared by the Tarachand Ramnath Seva Trust, which focuses on addiction trends among minors. The report highlights the need for immediate and structured interventions to address the issue.

He pointed out that drug abuse and alcohol consumption have serious consequences not just on health, but also on families and society at large. In response, Pune Police have intensified their anti-drug campaign, focusing on awareness and counseling sessions in schools and colleges to educate students about the risks.Strict action has also been initiated against drug traffickers. Police stations across the city have been instructed to identify areas where drug sales are prevalent and take firm action. Officials have been directed not only to act against local sellers but also to trace and target the supply networks behind them.

The commissioner emphasized that addiction among minors reflects deeper social concerns, noting that even children from well-off families are affected. He referred to recent incidents involving youth, including traffic violations, as indicators of broader behavioral challenges.

With around five lakh students studying in Pune, Kumar stressed that community participation is crucial. Citizens have been urged to actively support anti-drug initiatives and report any suspicious activities related to drug sales to the police without delay.
