Serious Traffic Jam on Sinhagad Road Blocks Ambulance, Residents Warn of Life-Threatening Delays
Traffic snarl on Sinhagad Road in Pune caused an ambulance to get stuck, prompting residents to raise alarms over emergency access.
Pune, November 01, 2025: A severe traffic gridlock along Pune’s Sinhagad Road has escalated into a public safety issue after an ambulance was trapped in the jam during the morning rush, underscoring the risks posed by persistent congestion in the area. On the affected stretch, vehicles queued for kilometres between Dhayari Phata, Warje, and the Rajaram Bridge, with movement coming to a near stand-still for over an hour.
The incident occurred when the ambulance—rushing a patient to hospital—became immobilised in traffic that began building around 8:00 a.m. and lasted well beyond 10:30 a.m. Local commuters report that the congestion was worsened by construction work on flyover landings, blocked lanes, heavy vehicle movement, and narrow alternate routes.
Residents in the adjoining housing societies say the regular gridlocks have now crossed beyond inconvenience—emergency vehicles being delayed or blocked is a clear warning sign that traffic management systems in the region require immediate intervention. One embattled commuter said: “We watched the ambulance crawl ahead at two-three km/h and feared for the patient’s life.”
Authorities have pointed out several contributing factors: ongoing infrastructure upgrades near the Rajaram Bridge, utility relocation near the flyover exits, encroachments and vehicles seized and parked on the main carriageway, as well as rush-hour heavy vehicle traffic. These elements combine to cause extended delays in this ghat-access zone.
Traffic policing sources note that while measures like one-way directions, alternate route signs, and heavy vehicle bans have been introduced on Sinhagad Road, the lack of real-time coordination, insufficient emergency-vehicle clearance corridors, and weak enforcement of lane discipline are hampering effectiveness. Some commuters suggest that opening a dedicated emergency lane or “green corridor” during peak hours could make a critical difference.
With expansion of residential and industrial developments along the route, traffic volume continues to grow; unless systemic changes are made, residents warn that the next incident may not end without tragic consequences.
