A woman tragically lost her life when a tree fell on her car in Kanegaon while returning from her brother’s funeral, highlighting roadside safety concerns
Kolhapur| 9th February 2026 : A tragic accident in Kanegaon village of Walwa taluka has shaken a family and the local community after a large roadside tree fell onto a car, killing a woman who was returning from her brother’s funeral. The incident occurred on Saturday night, plunging relatives and neighbours into fresh grief as they marked yet another loss in a single day.

According to local reports, the victim, identified as a 67-year-old woman, had attended her brother’s funeral earlier that day and was on her way home with family members when the tragedy struck. As the vehicle passed by a stretch of road near the cremation ground, an old or weakened tree suddenly toppled, crushing part of the car and causing fatal injuries. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead before she could be moved to a healthcare facility.
The weekend’s incident has triggered deep sorrow across the village, where neighbours described the sequence of events as nothing short of heartbreaking. Residents noted that the loss of both siblings on the same day has led to an outpouring of sympathy and shock. Eyewitnesses said there were no warning signs beforehand, underscoring how sudden and devastating the accident was for those involved.
Incidents involving falling trees are a known risk across rural and semi-urban stretches of Maharashtra, especially during winter storms and unpredictable weather patterns. Nationally, there have been multiple reports of roadside trees collapsing onto vehicles or pedestrians, leading to injuries and fatalities, particularly in areas with ageing tree populations and insufficient roadside maintenance.
Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether environmental factors, tree health, or road conditions contributed to the collapse. Police officials noted that roadside safety including periodic inspection and trimming of trees near roadways is critical to preventing such tragedies. Villagers have also urged district officials to assess and improve roadside vegetation management to avert future incidents.

Experts point out that tree-fall accidents can often be mitigated through community reporting systems and regular audits by municipal or rural engineering departments. With increasing traffic volumes on rural roads, particularly during festival seasons and family gatherings, the need for proactive safety measures becomes even more pronounced. Community leaders emphasize that preventing avoidable fatalities requires both administrative action and public awareness about potential hazards on rural highways.
As the bereaved family prepares for the final rites, neighbours and local leaders have rallied around them, expressing condolences and urging greater attention to roadside safety across Kolhapur district. The tragic loss has once again highlighted the fragile balance between natural landscapes and human mobility in the region.
