Baghdad | March 14, 2026:A United States military aircraft crashed in western Iraq, killing all six personnel on board, according to officials. The aircraft, a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refuelling plane, went down on Thursday in a desert region of western Iraq during an operational mission. Authorities confirmed that another aircraft involved in the same operation managed to land safely.

Officials clarified that the crash did not occur due to enemy fire or friendly fire, though the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. The aircraft reportedly went down in a remote desert area where several Iran-backed militia groups maintain bases. The crash comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent military operations involving the United States and Israel against Iran. Since late February, the regional security situation has remained volatile, with several retaliatory attacks reported from Iran-aligned armed groups targeting foreign military presence in Iraq and surrounding areas.

In a separate development, a French soldier was reportedly killed in an attack in the autonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq, marking the first French military casualty in the ongoing conflict. Emmanuel Macron confirmed the development on Friday. Reports also indicated that armed groups linked to Iran have warned that French interests in the region could be targeted following the arrival of a French aircraft carrier in nearby waters. According to security updates, attacks carried out by such groups have resulted in the deaths of several American soldiers and injuries to many others in recent months. The United States military has deployed additional aircraft and specialised search-and-rescue teams in the region to support ongoing operations and respond to emergencies
