The Maharashtra cabinet has cleared a major elevated highway project between Talegaon and Chakan, aiming to reduce congestion and improve connectivity in Pune’s key industrial corridor.

In a significant infrastructure push for the Pune region, the Maharashtra state cabinet has approved the construction of a four-lane elevated highway between Talegaon and Chakan, a move expected to bring major relief to daily commuters and industrial transport.

The decision was taken during a cabinet infrastructure committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, highlighting the government’s focus on strengthening road connectivity in one of Maharashtra’s busiest industrial belts.

The proposed project falls along National Highway 548D and will cover the 0 to 26-kilometre stretch between Talegaon and Chakan through an elevated four-lane corridor. Alongside this, a parallel surface road will also be developed to cater to local traffic, ensuring smoother movement and segregation of heavy and light vehicles.

Further extending the corridor, the stretch from Chakan to Shikrapur, covering approximately 26 to 43 kilometres, will be upgraded into a multi-lane surface highway. This integrated development is expected to significantly improve travel time and reduce bottlenecks across the industrial zone.

Officials stated that the project will be implemented under the Design, Finance, Build, Operate, and Transfer (DFBOT) model, allowing private participation while ensuring long-term maintenance and operational efficiency.

The Talegaon–Chakan belt is a critical industrial hub, with Chakan often referred to as one of India’s major automobile manufacturing centres. Heavy vehicular movement, including industrial freight traffic, has led to persistent congestion on existing roads, affecting both commuters and logistics operations.

Experts believe that the elevated corridor will play a crucial role in separating through traffic from local movement, thereby reducing travel delays and improving road safety. The project is also expected to support economic growth by enhancing connectivity between industrial zones and major highways, including NH-48.

Previous estimates indicate that the broader Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur corridor spans over 50 kilometres and has been planned to handle rising traffic demand, which currently exceeds capacity on the existing two-lane roads.

The government has emphasized that such infrastructure upgrades are essential to sustain the rapid industrial expansion in Pune district. With increasing investments in manufacturing and logistics, efficient road networks are seen as critical to maintaining competitiveness and attracting further development.

While the approval marks a key milestone, officials note that execution timelines, land acquisition processes, and tendering stages will determine how quickly the project moves toward completion. Once operational, the elevated highway is expected to transform daily travel across the Talegaon-Chakan corridor and provide long-term relief from traffic congestion.
