The India Meteorological Department warns of very rough seas and strong winds along Maharashtra’s coast as the Arabian Sea remains turbulent, prompting authorities to advise fishermen to avoid venturing into open waters.
Kolhapur (Konkan Coast) | October 29, 2025: Coastal districts of Maharashtra are on heightened alert after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings of rough sea conditions and strong winds over the Arabian Sea. The advisory covers the entire Konkan shoreline, including the jurisdiction of this region, as authorities note that the sea remains “khavalela” (turbulent).
In the past two days, maritime and port authorities have reported wave surges and powerful gusts up to 30–40 km/h. Fishermen and marine traffic operators have been instructed to stay ashore until conditions improve. Several ferry services and water-based transport routes were suspended as a precaution.
Local administration in areas such as Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri has activated alert mechanisms. Disaster management teams are monitoring low-lying coastal zones for possible high-tide flooding and erosion. Early morning reconnaissance imagery showed sea spray and breaking waves along breakwaters, prompting faster mobilization of response units.

According to the IMD’s marine bulletin, the rough sea state is expected to persist for at least the next 24–48 hours, with possible moderating after that—though a full return to calm may take longer depending on sea-surface conditions. Officials emphasise that while no cyclone is currently declared, the turbulence results from residual low-pressure influence and seasonal transition.
Residents, particularly in coastal hamlets and fishing communities, are advised to keep alert. They should avoid beach visits, secure boats and coastal equipment, and follow instructions issued by district authorities. With marine instability continuing, authorities warn that risks remain significant for near-shore and offshore operations.
