A 33-year-old woman was killed in a stray dog attack in Chakan, raising serious safety concerns as rising dog bite cases and ineffective control measures put residents at increasing risk

Pimpri-Chinchwad | 17 March, 2026: A shocking incident in Chakan has once again brought the growing stray dog menace into focus after a 33-year-old woman lost her life in a brutal attack early Monday morning.

The victim, Shobha Vijay Waghmare, originally from Nanded and currently residing in Chakan, was on her way home when a pack of stray dogs attacked her around 2:30 am near a local area. The assault was so severe that the woman succumbed to her injuries on the spot, leaving residents in the area shaken and fearful. CCTV footage of the incident has also surfaced, intensifying public concern.

The incident has triggered outrage among locals, with many questioning how long such attacks will continue. According to civic data, Pimpri-Chinchwad is home to nearly 94,000 stray dogs. Each year, between 10,000 and 28,000 dog bite cases are reported, with 28,527 incidents recorded in 2025 alone. Over the past decade, more than 1.7 lakh residents have reportedly been bitten by stray dogs, highlighting the severity of the issue.

The municipal corporation has been running sterilization and vaccination drives to control the population. However, critics argue that these efforts have fallen short of addressing the scale of the problem. Factors such as open garbage and easy food availability are believed to contribute to the increasing stray dog population.

Officials from the veterinary department stated that aggressive dogs are temporarily sheltered but must be released back into the same area as per court guidelines. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious, especially during late-night and early morning hours.Animal activists, meanwhile, have stressed the need for better sterilization coverage and responsible adoption initiatives, warning that without stronger measures, such incidents may continue to rise.
