April 2, 2026 | New Delhi: A major political storm appears to be brewing within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) following the death of Ajit Pawar, as a controversial letter sent by newly appointed party national president Sunetra Pawar to the Election Commission of India has triggered intense speculation about a leadership overhaul. Sources indicate that while the party was still observing mourning after Ajit Pawar’s demise, NCP working president Praful Patel and state president Sunil Tatkare had submitted correspondence to the Election Commission regarding the party’s revised organisational structure. However, soon after Sunetra Pawar formally assumed charge as national president in March, she reportedly informed the Election Commission that all communication made between January 28 and March 10 should be treated as null and void.

The latest submission to the Commission includes a list of 14 names, but only two office-bearers have been clearly designated with posts Sunetra Pawar as national president and Shivajirao Garje as treasurer. Notably, Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare and several other senior figures have been mentioned without any official designation beside their names, triggering widespread political chatter that they may have been removed from key posts. Political observers have pointed out that earlier, when Ajit Pawar had written to the Election Commission on May 20, 2025, each senior leader’s name was clearly accompanied by their post, including Patel as working president and Tatkare in a top organisational role.

The omission of designations in the latest list has raised questions over whether Sunetra Pawar is restructuring the party leadership or sending a strategic signal to senior leaders. Names such as Chhagan Bhujbal, Manikrao Kokate, Dilip Walse-Patil and others have also been included without any mention of their responsibilities. Adding to the buzz, Sunetra Pawar has reportedly arrived in New Delhi unexpectedly, with indications that she may meet senior NDA leaders, suggesting a possible high-level political consultation amid the unfolding internal crisis. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar’s son Jay Pawar has also been included in the list, hinting at his growing importance within the party’s future framework.
