Opposition parties (Thackeray Sena, Congress) have raised concerns over cost escalation and ecological damage in the Gargai dam project, while the ruling Mahayuti government remains firm on pushing it forward
Mumbai | 17 March, 2026: The proposed Gargai dam project has sparked fresh political controversy, with Shiv Sena (UBT) and Indian National Congress opposing the initiative and questioning both its financial viability and environmental impact.
Leaders from the opposition have raised concerns over the rising cost of the project even before construction has begun. They have questioned how the government will ensure that expenses do not escalate further in the future.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance, however, has defended the project, maintaining that it is crucial to address Mumbai’s long-term water needs. The project is expected to significantly boost water supply capacity for the city, which is already facing increasing demand due to rapid urban growth.Critics, including leaders from the Thackeray faction, have also highlighted environmental risks, pointing out that large-scale deforestation could be required for the dam. Concerns over the impact on forest areas and wildlife have been central to their opposition.
Additionally, earlier discussions within the civic body had flagged issues such as cost escalation, environmental damage, and rehabilitation of affected villagers, further complicating the project’s progress.Despite the opposition, the government appears determined to proceed, with the project seen as a key solution to Mumbai’s future water requirements. The issue is now shaping into a larger political and environmental debate, with both sides standing firm on their positions.
