A speeding car crashed into a metro‐station pillar on Bund Garden Road early morning, killing three young men. Investigation points to overspeeding and possible alcohol involvement.

Pune, November 03, 2025: A tragic accident near Bund Garden in Pune claimed three young lives early Sunday morning when a speeding car crashed into a Metro pillar. The horrifying crash, captured on CCTV, showed the black Volkswagen Polo losing control before violently colliding with the concrete pillar supporting the elevated Metro line.

According to police, the accident occurred around 5 a.m. The victims were identified as Yash Prasad Bhandari (23) from Thergaon, Hritik alias Om Vinayak Bhandari (23) from Pimpri Gaon, and their friend Khushwant Tekwani, a student from Beed district. While Yash and Hritik died on the spot, Tekwani succumbed to severe injuries later at the hospital.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the car was moving at an extremely high speed and may have been under the influence of alcohol, as liquor bottles were found inside the vehicle. Police have sent the driver’s blood samples for testing and are examining CCTV footage from nearby cameras to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash.

Officials from the traffic department stated that overspeeding remains a major concern, particularly during early-morning hours when traffic is sparse. The stretch near Bund Garden and the Metro corridor has been flagged before for high-speed incidents. Police have now begun reviewing safety measures in the area, including installing additional warning signs and speed-monitoring devices.

After the impact, the car was completely mangled, leaving no chance for the victims to escape. Rescue teams and bystanders rushed the injured to Sassoon Hospital, but doctors confirmed that all three had suffered fatal injuries. Senior officers from the Pune City Police reached the scene soon after and initiated a full investigation, involving forensic experts and accident-reconstruction specialists.

The incident also raises fresh questions about reckless driving habits in urban areas. Despite frequent awareness drives and strict laws against drunk driving, such incidents continue to occur due to a combination of poor enforcement and irresponsible behaviour by some motorists. Traffic experts emphasize that the city must adopt stronger deterrents — such as round-the-clock patrolling, stricter fines, and immediate licence suspension for speeding offences — to prevent future tragedies.

Local residents have demanded better illumination and more police presence along the stretch, noting that similar crashes have occurred in the past near the Metro pillars. Authorities have assured that the accident will serve as a case study for improving safety designs in urban corridors that mix metro infrastructure with vehicular traffic.
