Thunderstorm Alert Issued For Maharashtra From March 17-20; Farmers Advised To Protect Harvested Crops

Maharashtra may see thunderstorms, strong winds, and rain over multiple regions between March 17 and 20, prompting weather authorities to advise farmers to safeguard harvested produce.

Mumbai | 13 March, 2026: With the western Indian state of Maharashtra bracing for unsettled weather later this month, a preliminary weather forecast has raised alerts for thunderstorms, gusty winds, lightning and isolated hailstorms from March 17 to March 20, according to local meteorological sources. The advisory, which highlights the need for precautionary agricultural planning, comes at a crucial time when rabi crop harvesting is underway across many districts.

Weather officials say these conditions are likely to develop in the afternoon hours over parts of Vidarbha, Marathwada, Khandesh and Central Maharashtra -regions that span a wide geographical belt from eastern to western reaches of the state. While intensity may vary from place to place, strong surface winds and heavy showers are expected at intervals during the forecast period.

The state’s agriculture department has urged farmers and rural communities to closely monitor the evolving situation and take proactive measures to limit crop losses and infrastructure damage. Apart from crop safety, officials are also advising livestock owners to shelter their animals and avoid leaving them in open fields during active thunderstorm spells. In addition, farmers are encouraged to suspend irrigation and avoid chemical sprays when such weather conditions prevail, as sudden showers can increase risks and reduce effectiveness.

The timing of this warning aligns with seasonal transitions in northern and central India, when rising temperatures and atmospheric instability often create conditions ripe for convective activity, including thunderstorms. While these storms are typically of short duration, they can be intense enough to cause localised damage because of rapid changes in wind strength and rainfall intensity.

Authorities stress the importance of staying updated with official weather bulletins issued by the India Meteorological Department and local weather offices in Mumbai, Nagpur and other regional centres, which provide ongoing updates on weather systems across the state. Such advisories aim to keep farmers, residents and travellers informed about changing conditions so they can act accordingly.
