April 8, 2026 | Mumbai : The legal troubles surrounding Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Sameer Wankhede appear to be intensifying as the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has firmly defended its ongoing inquiry before the Bombay High Court. In a sworn affidavit submitted on Tuesday, the agency clarified that the investigation against Wankhede stems from two confidential complaints and is not influenced by any political figure. The NCB explicitly rejected claims linking the probe to former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik, stating that the inquiry is purely based on internal findings and procedural grounds. This clarification comes amid ongoing legal proceedings initiated by Wankhede, who has challenged the validity of the investigation against him.

Wankhede, who gained prominence for his role in high-profile narcotics cases, including the drug-related investigations following actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, has approached the High Court seeking relief from the inquiry. The matter was heard by a division bench comprising Justices A. S. Gadkari and Kamal Khata. During the hearing, the NCB opposed Wankhede’s petition and justified its actions through an affidavit filed by Deputy Inspector General Vishal Sanap of the agency’s southwest region. The affidavit emphasized that due process has been followed and that the inquiry is legitimate.

The High Court is now expected to examine the merits of Wankhede’s plea against the backdrop of the NCB’s firm stance. Legal experts suggest that the agency’s clarification could weigh significantly on the court’s decision, potentially complicating Wankhede’s efforts to seek relief.
