April 3, 2026 | Pune: Ride-hailing platform Uber has announced a significant reduction in the commission it charges auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers per ride in Pune, a move that has been welcomed by the driver community. The revised commission structure came into effect from Thursday morning (April 2), offering financial relief to drivers who have long raised concerns over declining earnings. Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha president Dr Keshav Khirsagar stated that Uber’s decision is a positive step, as the company has reduced its own share without placing any additional burden on passengers. He noted that despite the commission cut, Uber has not increased fare rates, allowing commuters to continue travelling at the same prices.

Driver associations believe the reduction will directly boost take-home income, especially for those dependent on multiple daily rides to sustain livelihoods. The decision has created an upbeat atmosphere among rickshaw and taxi drivers, who see it as a rare instance of a ride-hailing company responding to demands without triggering fare hikes. Dr Khirsagar also said the move reflects the impact of continuous pressure and efforts made by the Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha to address alleged exploitation and unfair deductions in app-based transport services. He described the commission cut as a “victory” for drivers and a step toward ensuring a more balanced system.

However, he criticised rival platforms Ola and Rapido for failing to take similar action. According to him, both companies have ignored the growing discontent among drivers regarding commission practices and fare-related issues. He warned that if Ola and Rapido do not announce immediate corrective measures, the unions may intensify protests and launch stronger agitation. The union has also urged the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and district administration to take strict action against companies accused of unfair practices. With Uber’s decision setting a precedent, transport observers believe pressure may now mount on other platforms to revise their policies.
