Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has launched a sharp attack on Maharashtra’s Health Minister Tanaji Sawant during his visit to the drought-affected Dharashiv district. Addressing a public rally, Thackeray openly questioned the government’s handling of relief packages and targeted Sawant, accusing him of neglecting the farmers of his own constituency despite being in power.
Thackeray said that while the government boasts about helping farmers, the ground reality tells a different story. “The relief package announced by this government has turned out to be empty — just like a crab’s shell,” he said, using a pointed metaphor that drew loud applause from the crowd. He further asked why farmers were not receiving the promised compensation and why the district’s elected leaders had failed to protect their interests.
Referring to Sawant without naming him directly at first, Thackeray remarked, “If the minister from this region cannot ensure fair aid for his own farmers, what is the point of holding office? Farmers are dying, but no one in the government seems to care.” His comments quickly gained traction, with the audience shouting slogans in support.
Thackeray accused the state government of betraying rural Maharashtra by prioritizing urban projects and business interests over essential farming support. He said that despite repeated announcements, crop insurance claims and relief funds have not reached those who need them the most. “When the farmer doesn’t get what he deserves, you make him a beggar in his own land,” he said.
His speech also highlighted the growing internal rift between his faction and the ruling coalition, of which Sawant is a part. Political observers say Thackeray’s remarks were designed not just to criticize the government but also to expose the failures of local ministers ahead of the civic and panchayat elections.
As the crowd cheered his statements, Thackeray vowed to continue his campaign across Marathwada, promising to hold the government accountable for every unfulfilled promise. Meanwhile, sources close to Tanaji Sawant have indicated that he may issue a response soon, though he has not commented publicly yet.
