April 3, 2026 | Pune: Unseasonal rain accompanied by hailstorm during the second week of March has caused widespread agricultural damage across Pune district, impacting crops over 1,532 hectares in eight talukas. According to preliminary data shared by the district administration, the weather event has affected 3,682 farmers across 69 villages, while the official panchnama process is still ongoing. The heavy spell of rain and hail on March 18 and 19 severely hit farming areas in Purandar, Indapur, Haveli, Bhor, Daund, Rajgad, Shirur and Baramati talukas. Following the disaster, Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister Sunetra Pawar directed officials to conduct immediate damage surveys and speed up assessment procedures. Revenue and Agriculture Department teams have since been deployed to evaluate losses and compile reports.
Officials said multiple crops have been impacted, including wheat, onion, pomegranate, vegetables, cucumber, watermelon, chickpea, banana, fodder crops and flower cultivation. Farmers in Indapur and Purandar have reported the highest losses, with standing crops damaged due to hail and waterlogging. In Indapur taluka alone, crops across 646 hectares have been affected, impacting 1,269 farmers. Purandar has recorded damage across 389.80 hectares, with 1,283 farmers facing losses. Haveli taluka has reported crop damage over 170 hectares, while Daund has recorded 110.20 hectares. Shirur has reported 93 hectares, Bhor 78 hectares and Baramati 41.70 hectares of crop damage.

Although some talukas have comparatively lower figures, officials said the economic impact on farmers remains significant due to the timing of the rains during critical harvesting and fruiting stages. The administration has indicated that more unseasonal rainfall may occur in the coming days, increasing concern among farmers already struggling with losses. Authorities said the final damage report will be submitted soon after completion of surveys. Farmer groups have demanded immediate compensation and relief measures, urging the government to ensure timely financial support before the next cropping cycle begins.
