Join the birding marathon at Pune’s Vetal Tekdi from Nov 5–12, explore 260+ species, record sightings via eBird and support conservation of urban forest.

Pune, October 28, 2025: The hill-top green pocket of Vetal Tekdi in Pune is set to host its third edition of the bird-watching extravaganza: the birding marathon will run from November 5 to 12, and is organised by the local action group committed to protecting this urban forest. Over the week, bird-lovers are invited to traverse the hill’s trails, log their sightings on the digital platform eBird and compete in individual and team categories for the “Birding Champion” crown.

The event aligns with Bird Week (Pakshi Saptah) in Maharashtra, a tribute to renowned ornithologists who helped map India’s bird-life. The marathon is more than a hobby event—it serves as an instrument for conservation: in previous editions it helped document a rare sighting of the European Honey Buzzard in this region and bolstered the case for protecting Vetal Tekdi as a reserved forest.

With over 260 species recorded on the hill, the area stands out as one of Pune’s prime bird-watching zones. The data accumulated through these marathons makes a tangible difference in urban ecology monitoring and helps local authorities and conservationists argue for stronger protection.

Participants (teams of 1-4) are asked to submit sightings only through eBird and not treat the event like a photography contest—photographs are supplementary evidence, while the emphasis is on accurate bird identification and documentation. The organisers stress that having at least one team member familiar with the terrain helps.

For newcomers, guidance and support via eBird India’s resources is encouraged. The event invites the broader community—nature lovers, school groups, local bird-watching clubs—to engage with urban biodiversity, help map it, and become part of a conservation movement.

As the date approaches, the organisers expect a surge in participation and community awareness. Beyond being a fun weekend outing, this bird-marathon offers a meaningful way to contribute to science, help safeguard one of Pune’s ecological assets, and enjoy the rich bird-life that the city often overlooks.
