May 9, 2026 | Chennai: Tamil actor and politician Vijay moved a decisive step closer to forming the government in Tamil Nadu after his party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), secured the backing of key opposition allies to cross the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.

Following intense political negotiations, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Congress announced their support to the Vijay-led alliance. The development helped TVK reach the crucial majority figure of 118 seats required to stake claim to power.

According to political sources, TVK currently holds 107 legislators, while Congress contributed support from five MLAs. The CPI, CPI(M), and VCK extended backing through two legislators each, taking the alliance tally to the exact majority mark.

Late Thursday night, Vijay reportedly met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar and submitted letters of support from allied parties while formally staking claim to form the government. The Governor had earlier asked the party to furnish proof of majority support before extending an invitation to form the administration.

TVK leaders intensified outreach efforts over the past two days, formally writing to Left parties seeking support. Senior party functionary CTR Nirmal Kumar personally met CPI state secretary M. Veerapandian and CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam at their respective party offices in Chennai to secure formal backing. Sources indicated that senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge also held discussions with Left leaders and VCK representatives to facilitate support for the Vijay-led front.

The rapid political developments have significantly strengthened Vijay’s emergence as a major force in Tamil Nadu politics, with his party now poised to form its first government in the state.
