Water Tanker Dependence Surges in Pune as March Heat Triggers Widespread Water Shortage

Rising temperatures and depleting local water sources have sharply increased Pune’s dependence on water tankers, with thousands of deliveries already made in March as several neighbourhoods struggle with irregular supply.

March 13 | Pune With the onset of summer and rapidly rising temperatures, several areas in Pune are witnessing a sharp rise in dependence on water tankers as local water sources begin to dry up. The situation has led to a surge in demand for tanker supply across multiple parts of the city and nearby villages. According to officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation, water tanker usage has increased significantly since the beginning of March. As many residential localities face irregular supply from traditional sources such as wells, borewells and local reservoirs, the civic administration has been compelled to deploy additional tankers to meet daily requirements.

Data from the civic body indicates that over 43,000 tanker trips have already been carried out this year to supply water in affected areas. The demand has grown steadily in recent weeks as temperatures continue to rise, leading to greater consumption and faster depletion of groundwater reserves. Officials said the tanker supply has particularly increased in suburban and newly developed areas where water infrastructure is still developing. Several villages that were recently merged into the municipal limits are also experiencing significant water stress, forcing residents to rely heavily on tanker deliveries.

Municipal authorities stated that tanker services are being monitored closely to ensure fair distribution of water across affected localities. The administration has also warned private tanker operators against overcharging residents during the shortage period. Civic officials expect tanker demand to rise further in the coming weeks if temperatures continue to climb and rainfall remains absent. Authorities are therefore working to manage available water resources carefully while ensuring that essential supply reaches all affected neighbourhoods.
