Why Poor AC Cooling Is Often Caused by a Simple Maintenance Mistake, Experts Say

Many households blame expensive faults when air conditioners stop cooling efficiently, but experts say clogged filters, poor servicing, and wrong temperature settings are the most common reasons behind reduced performance.
Pune | April 29, 2026: As temperatures continue to soar, many residents are complaining that their air conditioners are running but failing to cool rooms effectively. While several users fear compressor damage or gas leakage, technicians say the problem is often caused by basic maintenance issues that are frequently ignored. According to reports, one of the most common reasons behind poor cooling is a dirty air filter. Dust and debris accumulate over time, restricting airflow and forcing the AC to work harder. This not only reduces cooling efficiency but can also increase electricity consumption significantly. Experts recommend cleaning filters every 10 to 15 days during peak summer usage.
Routine servicing is also considered essential for maintaining AC performance. Light servicing every two months during heavy summer use can help prevent sudden breakdowns. Technicians advise periodic checks of refrigerant levels, condenser coils, and the outdoor unit to ensure the machine operates smoothly.
Another common mistake made by users is setting the temperature too low, assuming it will cool the room faster. However, cooling specialists suggest maintaining the thermostat between 24°C and 26°C for better energy efficiency and reduced strain on the appliance. Lower settings may overwork the system without delivering proportionate benefits.

Room conditions also play an important role in effective cooling. Keeping doors and windows closed, sealing air gaps, and limiting direct sunlight can help the AC cool faster while using less power. Poor insulation or open spaces often make cooling slower and costlier.
If cooling remains weak even after cleaning filters and adjusting settings, users are advised to seek professional inspection, as low refrigerant, dirty coils, or component faults may require technical repairs. With summer demand rising, preventive maintenance is being seen as the easiest and most cost-effective way to keep air conditioners performing efficiently.
