A routine security check at Pune International Airport resulted in the recovery of approximately 1.7 kilograms of gold jewellery valued at nearly ₹2 crore from the handbag of a passenger scheduled to board a flight to Amritsar. The recovery was made after personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) noticed that the passenger’s handbag appeared unusually heavy during the standard screening process.
According to officials, the baggage was subjected to a detailed inspection after security personnel became suspicious. During the examination, a substantial quantity of gold jewellery was recovered from the bag, following which the passenger was questioned regarding its ownership and the purpose of carrying the valuables.
The passenger was identified as Rashpal Singh, who reportedly informed authorities that he is the proprietor of M.K. Jewellers, a jewellery business based in Amritsar. He claimed that he frequently travels to Pune to supply gold jewellery to customers across various parts of Maharashtra as part of his business operations.
Following the recovery, officials initiated verification of the documents related to the jewellery, including ownership records and other supporting paperwork, to ascertain whether the transportation complied with all applicable legal and commercial requirements. Authorities also questioned the passenger as part of the standard verification process before taking further action.
While no official statement indicating any illegal activity has been issued, the incident highlights the strict security protocols followed at airports, particularly when passengers are found carrying high-value items. Security agencies routinely conduct thorough inspections whenever baggage raises suspicion during screening to ensure compliance with aviation security and regulatory norms.
The matter remains under examination, and further action, if any, will depend on the outcome of the document verification and the findings of the concerned authorities.
