In a remarkable achievement for the Indian community in the United Kingdom, 23-year-old Tushar Kumar has become the youngest Indian-origin mayor in British history after taking charge as the Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood in Hertfordshire. His appointment is being celebrated as a major milestone for youth leadership and political representation among the Indian diaspora in the UK.

Originally from Haryana, Tushar Kumar moved to London with his family during childhood and later pursued Political Science at King’s College London. His political journey began early when he joined local civic activities and community initiatives while still a student. At the age of 20, he became one of the youngest Indian-origin councillors in the country after being elected to the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council in 2023.

Before assuming office as mayor, Kumar also served as Deputy Mayor and gained recognition for his active involvement in community welfare, youth empowerment and public service programmes. During his official mayor-making ceremony, he expressed gratitude towards residents, fellow councillors and his supporters, while promising to focus on local charities, civic engagement and encouraging young people to participate in public life.
