The Maharashtra government has banned traffic police from using private mobile phones for issuing e-challans. Officers violating this rule will face suspension and strict disciplinary action.

Mumbai, October 7, 2025:In a strong move to curb misuse of authority, the Maharashtra government has issued strict orders prohibiting traffic police from using private mobile phones while issuing e-challans. The directive comes after repeated complaints of officers using personal devices to photograph vehicles and wrongfully impose fines.

Additional Director General of Police (Traffic) Pravin Salunkhe issued the order, which applies to Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Navi Mumbai, and Pimpri-Chinchwad traffic divisions. The circular mandates that only official, department-authorized devices should be used for e-challan operations.

The decision follows several complaints from transport unions and motorists, who alleged that some traffic personnel used personal phones to capture images of vehicles and later uploaded them to the e-challan system, leading to errors and misuse.

Officials stated that any officer found violating the order would face immediate suspension, followed by departmental inquiry. The government emphasized that the step is aimed at maintaining transparency, accountability, and fairness in the e-challan process.

The order was finalized after a meeting between Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and senior officials, where concerns over arbitrary enforcement and misuse of power were raised.

The directive also reinforces citizens’ rights — stating that while individuals can photograph their vehicles during traffic stops for evidence, police must follow proper digital and procedural protocol.
