Yerawada Open Prison Lake Desilted, Water Storage Capacity Increases by 10.93 Million Litres
Pune: The desilting work of the five-acre lake located inside the Yerawada Open Prison at the Yerawada Central Prison has been completed through a joint initiative by the Pune Municipal Corporation and Indvis Welfare Foundation. The project has increased the lake’s water storage capacity by approximately 10.93 million litres (1 crore 9 lakh 31 thousand litres).

As part of the project, 10,931 cubic metres of silt were removed from the lake. The excavated silt was spread across a nearby three-acre rocky farmland, improving the fertility of the otherwise barren land.
The enhanced storage capacity is expected to significantly improve groundwater recharge by allowing more rainwater to percolate into the ground. This, in turn, will help maintain higher groundwater levels and ensure that nearby wells retain water for a longer period, making the initiative an important step towards sustainable water conservation.
The project was inaugurated by Shyamkant Shendge, Superintendent of Yerawada Open Prison. Among those present were Bhupendra Mujumdar, Director of Indvis Welfare Foundation, Sanjay Parlikar, Pune Coordinator, Rajendra Dhamale, Sameer Dharmadhikari, Jailer Nagesh Kamble, and Chandrakant Khandwe.
The initiative was carried out under the guidance of Dr. Suhas Warke (IPS), Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons, Maharashtra, and Yogesh Desai, Special Inspector General of Prisons. Prison staff and inmates also played a significant role in completing the work.

The Pune Municipal Corporation supported the project by providing a Poclain excavator and two dumpers for 15 days, with assistance from Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, Additional Commissioner Prajit Nair, Bipin Shinde, and Dilip Pandkar.
Officials from Indvis Welfare Foundation said that the remaining work has been temporarily halted due to the ongoing monsoon. The project will resume once the ground dries sufficiently to allow machinery to operate safely.
