Chetan Bhagat says Artificial Intelligence can never replace human emotions, heartbreak, or authentic storytelling as he launches his new novel “12 Years: My Messed-Up Love Story” in Pune.

At his Pune book launch, author Chetan Bhagat said AI can mimic writing but not human emotions. He emphasized that true storytelling comes from lived experiences, not machine-generated words.

Pune|October 7, 2025: Renowned author Chetan Bhagat launched his new novel “12 Years: My Messed-Up Love Story” in Pune and spoke about the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creative writing. He asserted that while AI may evolve to replicate writing styles, it will never be able to replace human emotion, heartbreak, or personal experience.

“Writing is not just about grammar or style—it’s about feeling. AI can process data, but it cannot feel pain, love, or longing,” Bhagat told the audience. “Fiction succeeds when it connects emotionally, and only real experiences can create that connection,” he added.

Bhagat’s latest novel explores a modern love story between a 33-year-old divorced man and a 21-year-old woman, highlighting the complexities of relationships marked by age differences and emotional baggage. He described it as a story that reflects “messy and imperfect human love.”

Discussing the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT, Bhagat noted, “AI might be a great assistant for brainstorming or editing, but it lacks authenticity. Readers can always sense whether a story has a human heart behind it.”
He further said that the timeless qualities of a good writer—honesty, discipline, observation, and emotional depth—can never be replaced by technology.

“Machines can copy creativity, but they cannot feel it,” he remarked.
Addressing young readers, Bhagat encouraged them to use technology as a support system, not a substitute. “AI is a tool, not a storyteller. It can enhance creativity but cannot replace the human soul that drives literature,” he concluded.
