President Trump has begun demolishing the White House East Wing to build a $300 million ballroom, funded by private donations from tech and crypto companies, amid a federal government shutdown.
Washington, D.C. | October 23, 2025: President Donald Trump has initiated the demolition of the White House East Wing to construct a lavish new ballroom, a move that has sparked controversy and raised questions about priorities during a federal government shutdown. The project, estimated to cost $300 million, is being privately funded through donations from tech and cryptocurrency companies, including Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Coinbase.
The East Wing, which houses the First Lady’s offices and other administrative spaces, began undergoing partial demolition on October 20. Despite earlier assurances that the construction would not interfere with the existing structure, heavy machinery has been seen dismantling parts of the building. President Trump has defended the project, stating that the new ballroom will be connected to the White House via a glass bridge and will not alter the main residence.

The ballroom is designed to accommodate up to 999 guests and is intended to serve as a venue for state functions and dignitary events. Construction is expected to be completed before the end of Trump’s term in January 2029.
The demolition has faced criticism from preservationists and some lawmakers, who argue that it undermines the historic integrity of the White House. Additionally, the project has raised ethical concerns due to the involvement of major corporate donors. The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), which oversees federal construction in Washington, D.C., has limited authority to halt the project, as the White House is exempt from certain review processes.
