Pune police and the state ATS arrest a computer engineer for alleged contact with a terrorist organization and possession of extremist material.
Pune, October 28, 2025 – Pune – The Maharashtra Anti‑Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a computer engineer in the area of Pune Junction railway station on charges of maintaining contact with a terrorist organization and possession of extremist material. According to official statements, the accused had been under surveillance, and the operation was conducted following credible intelligence about his links and activities
Investigators say the 35-year-old engineer was found in possession of digital devices and documents that pointed to his involvement in radical activity. The searches uncovered laptops, mobile phones and electronic data indicative of communication with an extremist group. The ATS has termed the arrest significant, saying it may be part of a wider network. Several houses and locations in Pune were reportedly searched in coordination with this arrest.
Sources say the accused had been working in the city for some time and settled in the Kondhwa area. His role allegedly involved contact with handlers, dissemination of extremist content and possibly recruitment of vulnerable youth. The ATS is now tracing his communications, device logs and travel records. Officials emphasise this is not an isolated case but part of the state’s effort to crack down on radicalisation and terror modules in Maharashtra.
This arrest follows multiple recent operations by the ATS in the Pune region involving extremist funding, online radicalisation and terror module arrests. Earlier actions had led to seizure of electronic records, questioning of suspects and identification of possible sleeper-cells. The authorities believe digital channels are now a key mechanism for radicalisation, necessitating intense surveillance and coordination across agencies.
Pune’s role as a large urban centre with a busy railway station makes it sensitive from a security-perspective. The fact that the alleged contact and operations were tied to the area around the railway station has heightened concern among officials, who caution that transport hubs are potential conduits for movement and planning of extremist activity. State and city police are expected to strengthen monitoring of person-travel, digital logs and suspicious behaviour around major transit points.
The investigation is now focusing on establishing the full extent of the accused’s involvement—whether he was acting independently or as part of a larger network, how long the contact had been ongoing, and whether any operational plot was under way. The ATS has not yet released details about the terrorist organization in question, citing the sensitivity of the probe. Charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) are likely to be invoked.
For the public, authorities recommend vigilance around railway areas and transport hubs, reporting any suspicious devices or behaviour to local police. The state government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism, emphasising that digital threats are as real as physical ones. As investigations proceed, further arrests or seizures may follow reflecting the scale of the threat and the challenge of preventing radicalisation in urban settings.
