Railway Board’s Malhotra Inspects Pune Station Redevelopment & Hadapsar Terminal Progress
Railway Board member Hitendra Malhotra reviews major redevelopment at Pune station and Hadapsar satellite terminal to ease congestion and upgrade infrastructure.
Pune | November10, 2025: The redevelopment of Pune Railway Station and the expansion of Hadapsar Satellite Terminal received a detailed on-ground review during the visit of a senior Railway Board member responsible for Operations and Business Development. The inspection, conducted with senior Central Railway officials, focused on the pace of civil works, passenger amenity upgrades, yard improvements, and operational preparedness. The visit marked a significant milestone in the ongoing modernisation efforts for Pune’s rapidly growing railway network.
During the inspection at Pune Railway Station, officials examined the upgraded station layout, proposed passenger-amenity enhancements, circulation areas, and the overall redevelopment blueprint designed to handle increasing passenger footfall. Pune’s station has long faced challenges such as limited platform capacity, restricted yard space, and rising train movement. With the city’s expanding population and increasing rail demand, the redevelopment project is expected to transform the station into a high-capacity, passenger-friendly hub with improved connectivity and reduced congestion.
The review further continued at Hadapsar, which is being developed as Pune’s dedicated satellite terminal to reduce the load on Pune Junction. The site visit included an assessment of ongoing civil works, track development, operational readiness, and the terminal’s long-term plan to originate and terminate major trains. Officials discussed the need to accelerate infrastructure completion so that Hadapsar can shoulder a significant portion of Pune’s rail traffic, including long-distance passenger operations. The terminal is also envisioned to complement Pune’s expanding freight movement by offering additional routing options and easing the pressure on the city’s core rail assets.
The strategic intention behind the satellite terminal is clear: Pune Junction currently handles far more trains than its designed capacity, resulting in delays, limited operational flexibility, and overcrowding. Shifting train operations to Hadapsar will help streamline train scheduling, improve punctuality, and enable smoother yard management. However, the inspection also highlighted a few practical challenges, such as the need for better last-mile connectivity, broader approach roads, and improved passenger-movement infrastructure around the terminal. Addressing these issues will be crucial to ensuring that Hadapsar functions as a fully capable alternative to Pune Junction.
Officials also reviewed the progress of associated projects such as yard remodelling, platform extensions, passenger-flow enhancements, and integration with Pune’s expanding urban transport network. The redevelopment plan aims not only to enhance train handling but also to create an improved commuter experience with modern amenities, upgraded waiting areas, and efficient entry-exit systems. The broader vision includes seamless regional connectivity, improved freight movement, and a more reliable railway ecosystem for the Pune division.
The visit underscores the Railway Board’s strong focus on infrastructure modernisation and operational efficiency. With Pune emerging as one of the fastest-growing urban regions in the country, railway capacity expansion has become an urgent necessity. The successful redevelopment of Pune station, combined with the timely completion of Hadapsar Satellite Terminal, is expected to significantly improve train operations and reduce the burden on existing infrastructure. The next phase will depend heavily on completing auxiliary infrastructure, strengthening access routes, and ensuring coordinated planning between railway authorities and city agencies.
