Pune FDA Seizes Food Stock Worth ₹7.61 Lakh Over Quality and Labelling Violations
Pune FDA seizes 4,289 kg of food products and 1,238 packets worth ₹7.61 lakh over suspected quality and labelling violations.
Pune: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized a large quantity of food products in Pune and surrounding areas during inspections aimed at checking food quality, safety and compliance with mandatory labelling requirements.
According to the latest action, FDA officials seized around 4,289 kg of food products along with 1,238 packets, with the total value of the seized stock estimated at approximately ₹7.61 lakh. The products were taken into custody over suspected violations related to quality standards and labelling requirements.
The inspections are part of the food safety department’s continuing enforcement drive against businesses suspected of selling, storing or distributing products that do not meet prescribed safety and regulatory standards.
Labelling violations can include missing or inadequate information required under food safety regulations. Authorities have been particularly checking packaged and processed food products to ensure that consumers receive essential information about the product, including its identity and other mandatory declarations.
The latest seizure comes amid intensified food safety inspections across Maharashtra, particularly ahead of the festive season. In recent enforcement drives, the FDA has taken action against establishments over suspected adulteration, substandard products, unhygienic storage, improper labelling and operation without valid licences.
In one recent statewide drive, the FDA reported seizing more than 50,600 kg of food products worth nearly ₹1.20 crore between September 23 and 27. The Pune division accounted for 6,366.88 kg of seized food products valued at ₹28.54 lakh, including khoa, paneer, ghee, cream, sweets, shrikhand, lassi, edible oil, farsan and wafers. Some of these products were suspected to be substandard, unsafe, adulterated or incorrectly labelled.
The department has also been carrying out targeted inspections of food manufacturers, warehouses, dairy units, restaurants, bakeries and distributors. Officials have said that samples from seized products may be sent for laboratory testing, with further action depending on the findings and applicable food safety provisions.
The intensified checks are significant for consumers as the festive season typically sees a sharp increase in demand for sweets, dairy products, packaged foods and other ready-to-eat items.
The FDA has urged consumers to check manufacturing and expiry dates, product labels and the FSSAI licence or registration details of food businesses before making purchases.
The department has indicated that enforcement action will continue against businesses found selling or storing food products that are unsafe, expired, tampered with, substandard or otherwise non-compliant with food safety regulations
