CNG Supply Hit in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai After Pipeline Damage, Public Transport Disrupted
A damaged gas pipeline at the RCF plant in Chembur has halted CNG supply across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, leaving autos, taxis and buses stranded as pumps shut down or run dry.
MUMBAI, 17 November 2025 – A major CNG shortage has hit the Mumbai Metropolitan Region after a natural gas pipeline feeding the city’s network was damaged at the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers site in Chembur. The disruption has forced hundreds of CNG pumps to either shut down or operate with minimal supply, leaving auto-rickshaws, taxis and buses stranded or operating with long delays.
Mahanagar Gas Limited confirmed that the rupture in the GAIL pipeline has severely affected CNG availability in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. The company said restoration work is underway but did not provide a definite timeline for full supply to return. While domestic piped gas has been prioritised to avoid disruption in households, transport users are bearing the brunt of the outage.
By early morning, massive queues had formed outside the few stations that remained partially functional. Many autorickshaw and taxi drivers waited for hours to refuel, while several others simply returned home due to lack of fuel. Transport activists said more than three lakh vehicles that depend on CNG are affected. Public buses that run on natural gas also reported delays, and several cab aggregators have already suspended CNG-based services in certain areas.
Commuters reported cancelled trips, long waiting periods and inflated fares as drivers struggled to find fuel. Some transport unions have demanded temporary diesel or petrol support until supply stabilises. Industrial units that rely on PNG have also been advised to shift to backup fuel sources to reduce pressure on the system.
Officials said repair work is being carried out on a priority basis, but full restoration may take time depending on the extent of the damage. The incident has highlighted the region’s heavy dependence on a single pipeline system and renewed calls for a more resilient backup network to avoid similar crises in the future.
Authorities have urged motorists to stay updated through official notifications and plan travel accordingly until CNG supply normalises. For now, fuel rationing, lengthy queues and restricted operations are expected to continue across the Mumbai region until repairs are completed.
