PUNE, 17 November 2025 – A woman was arrested in Pimpri-Chinchwad after allegedly stealing a mangalsutra from a fellow passenger on a PMP bus and then attempting to injure her with a blade while trying to escape. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon near Municipal Bhavan in Chikhli, where the bus was heading toward its scheduled route.

According to police, the accused has been identified as 29-year-old Ashwini Avinash Bhosale, a resident of Gangewadi in Karjat taluka. She reportedly sat next to a 53-year-old woman and used a wire cutter to quietly cut off the mangalsutra from her neck. The victim felt the movement, noticed the theft and immediately raised an alarm, causing panic inside the bus.

When confronted, Bhosale allegedly pulled out a blade and slashed the victim’s hand in an attempt to silence her and escape. Passengers acted quickly, restrained her and prevented her from fleeing. The bus was halted and the police were called. Officers from Chikhli Police Station arrived at the scene and took the accused into custody.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the accused has a criminal background and police are now investigating whether she is linked to similar crimes targeting women commuters. CCTV footage from the PMP bus along with passenger statements are being used as key evidence in the case.

The incident has raised concerns about safety in public transport, especially for elderly women who often travel alone. Police have urged passengers to stay alert and avoid displaying valuable jewellery on crowded routes. They also appealed for immediate reporting of suspicious activity to prevent such crimes.

The accused has been booked under relevant sections for theft, assault and attempted grievous harm. Further investigation is underway and police say more cases may emerge if other victims come forward.
