Kolhapur District Health Survey Finds Rise in Leprosy Cases Ahead of Statewide Screening
Kolhapur
As Maharashtra launches a door-to-door leprosy detection drive from November 17, Kolhapur’s health department survey has identified rising leprosy cases, prompting renewed efforts under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme.
Kolhapur | 17 November 2025 : In a proactive move, the Kolhapur Health Department has revealed a steady detection of leprosy cases in the district, just as Maharashtra prepares to kick off a statewide leprosy case-detection campaign. While detailed numbers from the latest local survey are still being compiled, reports suggest a noticeable uptick in suspected and confirmed leprosy patients in several talukas.
This local effort aligns with the larger state initiative, which will begin on November 17 and run until December 2, under the Maharashtra Public Health Department. A staggering 65,832 teams, each composed of an ASHA worker and a male volunteer, have been deployed. These teams aim to screen over 8.66 crore people across rural and urban areas.
During the campaign, survey teams will conduct physical examinations of household members. Suspected leprosy cases will be referred to medical officers for evaluation, and those confirmed will be immediately started on multi-drug therapy (MDT).
The goal is to identify hidden or undiagnosed cases early, break the chain of transmission, and spread awareness about leprosy especially as Maharashtra targets zero transmission by 2027.
Kolhapur’s local health authorities stress that detection is key. According to district health data, while detection rates are improving, stigma and lack of awareness remain big hurdles. As part of the broader National Leprosy Eradication Programme, the district is reinforcing its outreach efforts, training field workers, and strengthening support services for patients.
