A 42-year-old supervisor died after falling from a height of 65 feet during work on Mumbai Metro Line 9. Authorities have penalised the contractor for safety failures.
Mumbai, Maharashtra | Nov 18, 2025 – :
A fatal accident at the Mumbai Metro Line 9 construction site in Mira Road has raised new concerns about safety in large infrastructure projects. A 42-year-old supervisor fell from a height of around 65 feet while working at the elevated Saibaba Nagar station site of the Dahisar–Mira–Bhayandar corridor. The victim, identified as Farhan Tahzeeb Ahmed, was overseeing material shifting work on the upper deck when he lost his balance and crashed to the ground.
The incident took place around 10 am. Workers nearby rushed him to Sunshine Hospital and later to the Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Government Hospital in Bhayandar, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police registered a case of accidental death and began collecting statements, site logs and CCTV footage to understand how a fall of that magnitude occurred at a site that was supposed to have safety equipment and standard protection systems in place.
Following the incident, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) initiated a formal inquiry and confirmed that safety lapses were present. The contractor, NA Construction Infra, has been fined ₹50 lakh, while the general consultant, Systra-CEG-Systra (India), has been penalised ₹5 lakh. Officials have also released ₹5 lakh as initial relief for the victim’s family, with additional compensation under labour and insurance laws likely to follow.
Authorities say that while workers are routinely required to wear safety harnesses and helmets, compliance at project sites often depends on supervisors, contractors and subcontracted labour teams. The fall has triggered questions about whether guardrails or nets were missing, whether the victim was using protective gear or if protocols were bypassed to meet deadlines.
This tragedy adds to a growing list of accidents linked to Metro Line 9. Past incidents have involved falling material, worker injuries and near-misses involving civilians. Labour activists say that elevated metro construction at such heights requires far stricter monitoring than what is typically enforced. They argue that pressure to complete projects quickly leads to shortcuts in safety.
Local residents in Mira Road say they have seen multiple safety scares in recent months. Some have demanded that work be halted until a full audit is completed. For families of workers, the news is a grim reminder of the risks involved in construction jobs that are often carried out without adequate protective measures.
Police officials are now awaiting the full site inspection report and medical findings. The investigation will determine whether criminal negligence charges can be applied. If safety rules were knowingly ignored, the case may escalate beyond an accidental death report.
Metro Line 9 is considered a key transport link for the region and part of Mumbai’s broader metro expansion plan. However, this accident has once again highlighted the human cost of rapid infrastructure development. The loss of a supervisor with years of experience has also raised concern about how many risks are being taken at multiple sites across the city.
For now, Metro Line 9 construction continues under increased scrutiny. The victim’s family, colleagues and safety advocates are demanding long-term change rather than just fines. Whether this incident finally forces a shift in on-site safety enforcement remains to be seen.
