Parner, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra | Nov 18, 2025 –:
In a disturbing incident in Gargundi village of Parner taluka, Ahmednagar district, an 80-year-old woman was murdered by her own grandson for her gold jewellery. The crime came to light after her son filed a complaint, and local police quickly arrested the grandson and his wife. The victim has been identified as Chandrabhaga Malhari Fapale. The accused grandson, Tejas Shantarama Fapale, and his wife, Vaishnavi Tejas Fapale, were taken into custody within hours of the complaint.
According to police reports, the murder occurred on Sunday afternoon, just after 2 pm, when the ageing woman was alone at home. The grandson entered the house, reportedly strangled her and killed her, allegedly to obtain her gold jewellery and mobile phone, which police estimate at around ₹3,08,000 in value. After the murder, the duo attempted to flee but were captured based on CCTV footage from the area.
The complaint was lodged by the victim’s son, Pandharinath Malhari Fapale (aged 60), who alleged that the grandson had formerly been charged in thefts – including soybean and tractor theft – indicating a pattern of criminal behaviour. Village residents expressed shock and disgust: “We never expected such betrayal from his own kin,” one resident said.
The local sub-divisional police inspector and teams visited the crime scene, carried out the inspection, and initiated the autopsy of the body at Takli Dhokeshwar rural hospital. The case is now being investigated under murder charges and theft, and the police seek to recover any remaining information on how the planning took place.
The incident has sparked outrage across the village and neighboring areas, highlighting concerns about trust within families and the vulnerability of elderly people. Residents also pointed out that the lack of social monitoring and rapid action in rural crime scenes can allow such crimes to happen.
As police continue their investigations, questions are being raised about whether the grandmother’s vulnerability was exploited because she lived alone for part of the day. Authorities have assured that they will apply the law firmly and take the accused through the full treatment of the criminal justice system.
