At the 2025 Governors Awards, Hollywood star Tom Cruise received his first Oscar  an honorary one  for his four-decade contribution to modern blockbuster cinema, calling filmmaking his identity.



Bureau Report |  November 19, 2025: Hollywood legend Tom Cruise was honoured with an Academy Honorary Award on November 16, 2025, during the Governors Awards in Los Angeles, Maharashtra Times reported. The Oscar, his first ever, acknowledged his decades-long career and his influential role in shaping modern blockbuster cinema.

The award was presented by director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is currently collaborating with Cruise on a new project slated for release in October 2026. Cruise accepted the honour in an emotional speech, saying that “making films is not what I do  it is who I am.”

Cruise spoke deeply about his lifelong passion for cinema, recalling how his love for films began as a child sitting in a dark movie theatre, watching a beam of light ignite his imagination, and opening his world.He reflected on the unifying power of cinema, saying it helps people “laugh together, feel together, hope together” regardless of where they come from.

At age 63, Cruise has been nominated for four Oscars before  for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and as a producer for Top Gun: Maverick  but never won. The honorary award at the Governors Awards is seen as recognition of his entire body of work and an affirmation of his contribution to cinema.

The event also honoured other industry veterans, including Debbie Allen and Wynn Thomas, underscoring the Academy’s celebration of long-term artistic achievement and the contributions of cinema craftsmen.
